Telomeres and Aging

Modern science has made some incredible advances in our understanding of how the body works, taking us deeper into the inner workings of cells, their complex interactions and the vital role of DNA as the building blocks of our amazing lives.
New research is now focusing on the role of telomeres, tiny structures that protect the DNA structure. Like the plastic ends of shoelaces that hold them together, telomeres are tiny buffers at the end of our chromosomes, that get shorter through daily wear and tear until they no longer function properly and errors can start to creep in, leading to disease.
Telomeres provide critical protection to the DNA as it replicates, and could play a vital role in longevity and against serious illnesses such as cancers.
Understanding more about them could be one of the most important breakthroughs in modern human science, and their significance was recognized when Elizabeth Blackburn, credited with discovering them, was awarded a Nobel Prize in 2009.
Health advocates are now exploring if, and how, it is possible to preserve telomeres for longer, and recent advances have created compounds that can be taken as supplements.
One company, Telomere Biosciences is already marketing their compound here on the Costa del Sol here in the Long Life Clinic. If you'd like to find out more about the supplement and how to test your telomere length, simply contact us – we'd be happy to help you.
Interestingly, common health advice relating to diet and exercise also seems to correlate with keeping the telomere structure in place for longer. Proper exercise, lots of fruit and vegetables, low stress living and some important supplements such as omega-3 fish oils, have been shown in studies to help slow down the shortening of telomeres.
A center based in Madrid, Life Length, offers a unique blood test that can measure their length. Developed by the highly respected Director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO), Dr. Maria Blasco, they can analyze incredibly accurately the condition of telomeres and therefore give an indication of biological age.
Could the secret to longevity be at the tips of our chromosomes?
