If our brains were computers, we'd simply add a chip to upgrade our memory. However, the human brain is more complex than even the most advanced machine, so improving human memory requires slightly more effort.

Certain areas of the brain are especially important in the formation and retention of memory.

The hippocampus, a primitive structure deep in the brain, plays the single largest role in processing information as memory. We can improve this area by taking HGH (Human Growth Hormone) and Pregnenolone.

The amygdala, an almond-shaped area near the hippocampus, processes emotion and helps imprint memories that involve emotion.

The cerebral cortex, the outer layer of the brain, stores most long-term memory in different zones, depending on what kind of processing the information involves: language, sensory input, problem-solving, and so forth.

In addition, memory involves communication among the brain’s network of neurons, millions of cells activated by brain chemicals called neurotransmitters.

Just like muscular strength, your ability to remember increases when you exercise your memory and nurture it with a good diet and other healthy habits.

There are a number of steps you can take to improve your memory and retrieval capacity. Neurobics is one of them. Neurobics are mental exercises designed to keep your brain alert and in good shape.

Here are a few neurobic exercises you can try:

Involve one or more of your senses in a novel context. You can use additional senses to do an ordinary task by blunting the sense normally used. For instance:

Get dressed for work or take a shower with your eyes closed.

Eat a meal with your family in silence. Use only visual cues.

or combine two or more senses in unexpected ways:

Listening to a specific piece of music while smelling a particular aroma.

Engage your attention. To stand out from the background of everyday activities something has to be unusual, fun, surprising or evoke one of your basic emotions like happiness, love or anger.

Go camping for the weekend.

Take your child, spouse or parent to your work for the day.

Break a routine activity in an unexpected, novel way (novelty just for it's own sake is not highly neurobic).

Take a completely new route to work.

Shop at a farmer's market instead of a supermarket.

Completely rearrange your office and desktop.

Exercising your brain to improve your memory is all very well. But to make sure that you get the most out of your efforts, you should also help your brain by supplementing with the right supplements.

You should take N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC), R-Lipoic, and Acetyl-Carnitine.

All of them are powerful antioxidants, and as such they increase Gluthation in your brain to protect you from harmful free radicals.

It is also important that you check your levels of Testosterone, Estrogens, Human Growth Hormone and Pregnenolone to pinpoint any deficiency and to be able to tailor your supplementation in a way that's specifically beneficial to you.

If you want to find out more about how to improve your memory and your brain function through the right supplementation, contact us and we'll be able to advise you about your specific needs.

As we age we accumulate more and more free radicals in our bodies, and we tend to suffer from more inflammation. The very process of aging is caused by free radicals oxidising our cells.

Inflammation is known as the precursor to diseases such as arthritis, gastritis, dermatitis and even cancer.

While we can't stop the aging process (yet), we can take steps to slow it down – i.e. to slow down oxidation and decrease inflammation in our bodies.

This in turn will help us to not only live longer but also to live a better quality life that is disease free for longer.

You've no doubt heard about antioxidants – the term is thrown around very often and it is true – antioxidants are a great way to protect your body from free radicals and inflammation.

Some of the most powerful antioxidants are:

Vitamin C

Co Enzyme Q10 (Ubiquinol)

Astaxantine

Some of the most powerful anti-inflammatories are:

Omega 3

Turmeric

Although many of us know the basics, we seldom take the necessary steps to either detect deficiencies or to prevent the unpleasant 'side-effects' of aging. We have no excuses for not taking action – technology and the tests available to us today are the best that have ever existed.

So here is what you can do to take control of your inflammation and to ensure that you live longer and disease free.

It is very important that you check the levels of Omegas 3, 6 and 9 in your blood. We typically have insufficient Omega 3 in our diets, and Omega 3 is the most beneficial for cellular health and repair.

To get the best anti-inflammatory results from your Omega 3 supplementation you must make sure the supplements you're taking are a high dose and enteric coated. This will triple the absorption of Omega 3 in your bowels.

Also to maintain optimal brain function you should be taking around 3 grams per day. To keep a good healthy heart you should take more than 5 grams a day.

It has also been established that for brain dysfunctions such as dementia, more than 10 grams a day will make dramatic improvements.

Test for the overall inflammation in your body by asking your doctor to run a CRP (C-Reactive Protein) high sensitivity blood test (or Inflammatory Marker Test). Your results should be less than 1. If your CRP test results are higher than 1 – you need to further investigate what's causing the inflammation.

Typically, when we find higher than normal inflammation in our patients, we look at the main cause of high levels of the CRP – inflammation of the gums.

We would also test that person's hormone (Testosterone, HGH and Thyroid) levels to decide on an appropriate bioidentical hormone treatment for them, as bioidentical hormones are known to have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Finally, start supplementing with good quality Vitamin C and Co Enzyme Q10 (Ubiquinol) and try to incorporate Turmeric into your diet or take a good quality Turmeric supplement. Take them every day and you will start to see dramatic differences in the way you feel and the way you look.

Of course if you're serious about taking steps to slow down the aging process, and reducing inflammation, you need a holistic approach and an experienced hand to guide you.

There are a multitude of factors that can help or hinder your efforts. That's why here at Long Life Clinic we want to educate you and help you live longer and disease free.
