Calcium Scoring

A calcium score is one of the methods used to predict coronary heart disease. A high calcium score may suggest you have a greater risk of having a heart attack or you might be in need of treatment.

Calcium scoring is a useful early screening test because it can suggest the presence of coronary heart disease even when the coronary arteries are less than 50 percent blocked.

Standard tests will not always reliably detect this level of blockage, and more than half of all heart attacks occur with less than 50 percent blockage.

The following groups are at a higher risk of heart disease and should ideally undertake this test:

  • people with family or personal history of coronary artery disease;
  • males over 45 years of age, females over 55 years of age;
  • past or present smokers;
  • people with history of high cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure;
  • overweight people;
  • people with sedentary lifestyles;
